WhatsApp's New Update Aims to Rival Apple's AirDrop in Cross-Device File Sharing

In a bid to provide users with a seamless and universal file-sharing experience, WhatsApp is reportedly working on a groundbreaking update that could challenge Apple's AirDrop supremacy.

According to information from WABetaInfo, the popular messaging platform is in the early stages of developing a feature that will enable users to share files across all devices.

While the update is still in development and has not entered beta testing, early details suggest a unique method for initiating file sharing. 

Users are expected to shake their devices to activate a file-sharing request, requiring both the sender and recipient to be in close proximity. This approach echoes the simplicity and proximity-based initiation seen in Apple's AirDrop.

The recipient, upon receiving the request, will be prompted to open WhatsApp and shake their device to view and accept the file. The exact proximity required for this process remains unknown, but for context, AirDrop typically operates within a range of about 30 feet.

One of the key aspects of this update is WhatsApp's commitment to security. The files, primarily photos and videos, will be end-to-end encrypted, ensuring user privacy during the sharing process. 

Moreover, the platform will maintain confidentiality by keeping phone numbers private when files are shared with individuals outside of the user's contacts.

Although there are similarities with AirDrop, certain details remain uncertain. It is unclear whether files will automatically download to the recipient's camera roll, or if the feature will rely solely on Bluetooth for transfer. WhatsApp currently allows the sending of up to 100 photos at once through regular messaging, and users eagerly await clarification on how this new feature will differ.

As the development progresses, users across various devices are eager to see if WhatsApp's new file-sharing capability will indeed give AirDrop a run for its money. 

While the exact release date remains unknown, the potential for a more inclusive and secure cross-device file-sharing experience has generated considerable excitement among the app's vast user base.
