Droupadi Murmu & Macron Takes a Buggy Ride: French President Joins Revived Tradition at Indian Republic Day Parade

The traditional carriage, absent from the Republic Day parade for 40 years, made a grand return as it ferried the two leaders to the Kartavya Path for the parade.

Escorted by men in striking red uniforms atop majestic horses, the 'buggy' was accompanied by the prestigious President’s Bodyguard, known as 'Rashtrapati Ke Angrakshak.'

This elite regiment, the senior-most in the Indian Army, marked a historic milestone this Republic Day, celebrating 250 years of dedicated service since its establishment in 1773.

The main ceremony kicked off at 10:30 am, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi commencing the day by paying homage to fallen heroes at the National War Memorial. Subsequently, the Prime Minister and other dignitaries convened at the saluting dais at Kartavya Path to witness the diverse and vibrant Republic Day parade.

French President Emmanuel Macron graced the occasion as the chief guest, adding an international flair to the festivities. The parade, designed to showcase India’s rich cultural diversity, unity, and progress, emphasized the nation's military prowess, bolstered by increasing indigenous capabilities.

The central government underscored the theme of 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) and 'Bharat - Loktantra ki Matruka' (India - the mother of democracy) for this year's celebration.

A unique highlight of the parade was the participation of over 13,000 special guests from various walks of life, reflecting the government's commitment to encouraging public engagement in the national festival.

Breaking gender barriers, the parade witnessed several historic firsts. Over 100 women artistes playing Indian musical instruments heralded the commencement of the event.

An all-women Tri-Service contingent marked their maiden participation, marching down the Kartavya Path to the delight of the spectators. Women pilots showcased their prowess during the Fly-past, symbolizing the strength of women power.

Notably, the contingents of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) comprised solely of women personnel, underscoring the growing role of women in India's armed forces.

The 75th Republic Day celebration truly captured the essence of India's progress, unity, and commitment to democratic values, leaving a lasting impression on the global stage with the special participation of French President Emmanuel Macron and the historic revival of the horse-drawn 'buggy' tradition.
